Radio On The T.V.

Music and TV. Both mean so much to each other. They exist independently in one sense, but are completely codependent in the other. They enhance one another. They breath life into each other. There are so many significant moments in television where the background music defined it all. The importance of music's relationship to television becomes even more evident when one considers how DVDs are often released without the original music. Moments that previously burned my eyes and ears became moments that numbed my ears with their silence.

So as a little homage to the babies of music and television, here are some of the BEST moments.

10. Michelle Branch - Goodbye to You
Buffy. Tabula Rasa. She's sad. She succumbs to Spike. Being ripped out of heaven does that sort of thing to a person. But not everything is about her. Willow and Tara are done because Willow couldn't keep her magic addiction under control. Oh and Giles returns to the motherland, which was probably way more sad to watch for Buffy than for me. So many goodbyes.

9. Chantal - Far Away
Felicity. Ben runs after felicity and catches her at the airport. Thank god for snow storms and flight delays. AND all this within the first 15 minutes exactly. All is right in the world again (No one needs to waste time remembering the next 45 minutes when things get super shitty again).

8. Macy Gray - Still
Felicity. Ben watches the british girl give in to her druggie bf for billionth time. She tried to walk away, but she stumbled.

7. Sheryl Crow - I Shall Believe
Roswell. Future Max destroys Liz's youthful wedding dreams and tells her to make Max fall in love with Tess. It's difficult at first, but staging a pretend Den of Love scene with Kyle does the trick. Max is heartbroken. Tess comforts him. And as Liz finally gets what would have been her future wedding dance with future max, he fades away. Say it will be alright.

6. Dave Matthews Band - Crash Into You
Roswell. I'm Liz Parker, and five days ago, I died. But then the really amazing thing happened - I came back to life.

5. Coldplay - Brothers and Sisters
Roswell. Such a simple scene, but such huge consequences. Isabelle grows frustrated with her parents nearing the truth about her, so she gets off the phone with Jesse and decides to release some of that frustration on her room. She uses her alien-ness to make the objects in her room swirl in a mini-tornado. Only for a minute! But the damage is done - her mom hid a videocamera in the room catching the moment in all its supernatural glory. Not using the original "Brothers and Sisters," and opting for the smoother, more intense remastered version perfectly captures the chaos and frustration of the moment.

4. Sarah McLachlan - Full of Grace
Buffy. Buffy skips town. Why? Angel's dead. Oh and it's because she had to stick a sword in him just moments after he got his soul back. Save the world? Or save the love of your life? La vie dure. Winter has never been so cold and so bitter.

3. Lo Fidelity All Stars - Battleflag (feat. Pigeonhead)
E.R. Schizo patient stabs Carter while everybody celebrates Valentine's Day outside with the music blaring and one thing missing - the knife to cut the birthday cake. As viewers watch Carter crumble to the floor and pulses build to match the beats of Lo Fidelity, hearts suddenly flatline - a pale Lindsay bleeds to death just a mere foot away from Carter. Battleflag is, afterall, off the album How To Operate With a Blown Mind...

2. Beth Orton - Cry Your Name
Roswell. Alex is dead. And Liz is desperate to see what's right in front of her. The delivery boy arrives right on time, thus ending the beth's pained croons and what do we find? Liz has promises to keep and miles to go before she sleeps.

1. Sia - Breath Me
BEST SONG USAGE IN T.V. EVER. You don't need to even watch Six Feet Under to be moved by this scene. In fact, I find myself constantly returning to YouTube to watch the final 10 minutes of the series and no matter how removed from the show I've been- I'm so fucking frapped every single time. Flash forward timeline that lets you see how each of the characters meet their demise, heavenly white glow/theme to all the scenes, heartbreaking song...fucking gorgeous.

Belated Valentine

So yesterday was Valentine's day, and sadly, Paris was severely lacking in hearts, candies, flowers, and all the usual (and wonderfully) kitschy aspects of the holiday. It may not be the greatest holiday, but there's something comforting about having it exist and thrive around you. I was hoping to use yesterday as an excuse to finally break through my blogger's block and post one of the many drafts piling up in my email. Clearly that didn't happen. Whatever. I'm going to pretend it's Valentine's Day right now and post what I put together in 5 minutes yesterday. It's not about quality right now - it's more about breaking through and getting something out there.

So what was the big idea for the Valentine's Day post? I decided to make things simple on myself and instead of painstakingly trying to rank anything or instead of haphazardly throwing a playlist together, I decided to see what my top ten songs containing the word "Love" are. I didn't consider any variations of the word, so "Lover," "Loving," etc. were all thrown out.

So my top ten with Love:

10. Love And War (11/11/46) (46 - ha!) - Rilo Kiley
9. Love In This Club (52) - Usher feat. Young Jeezy
8. I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (57) - Diana Ross, The Supremes and The Temptations
7. Baby Love (63) - Diana Ross and the Supremes
6. Does He Love You? (73) - Rilo Kiley
5. Real Love (78) - Beach House
4. Love Will Tear Us Apart (86) - Joy Division
3. Trying My Best To Love You (113) - Jenny Lewis
2. Skinny Love (119) - Bon Iver
1. This Tornado Loves You (138) - Neko Case

Has doing this revealed anything particularly special? No. I did realize two things though: A) Jenny really likes to use the word, and B) Taylor Swift would have made it if this was a Top 20.

But hopefully, this will convince me to start clearing out those drafts.

Happy Valentine's Day <3
